The gap between the most digitised facilities and the least is enormous — and within a single facility, it is common to find some departments digitised and others still on paper, with no data integration between them.
Why Paper Records Are a Patient Safety Issue, Not Just an Efficiency Issue
The case for EMR in Cameroon is not primarily about administrative efficiency, though efficiency matters. It is about patient safety.
Medication errors. Without a complete medication history, doctors prescribe drugs without knowing what the patient is already taking. Dangerous drug interactions that a digital system would flag automatically go undetected.
Missed diagnoses. A patient with a complex condition may be seen by three different doctors in three different departments, none of whom can see what the others have found. Patterns that would be obvious in a complete digital record go unrecognised in three separate paper files.

At registration: The patient is registered in the system once. Their name, date of birth, contact information, insurance details, and a generated patient number are captured. On all subsequent visits, they are identified by their patient number and their complete history is immediately accessible.
At triage: The triage nurse records vital signs and the presenting complaint directly in the system, linked to the patient's record.
At consultation: The doctor opens the patient's digital file, reviews their full history, records the consultation findings, enters prescriptions into the system (which automatically checks for drug interactions and allergies), and generates a referral or admission order if needed.
At the pharmacy: The pharmacist sees the prescription on their screen, dispenses the medication, records the dispensing, and the patient's medication history is updated in real time.
